QB Michael Vick: QB Added to Philly Roster by Adam Caplan of ScoutNFLNetwork.com, September 15, 2009 at 4:48pm ET
Michael Vick Profile
The Philadelphia Eagles have removed QB Michael Vick from the exempt
list and have added him to the 53-man roster, the team announced Tuesday. Vick
is now eligible to participate in practice this week, but is still serving a
two-game suspension from the NFL and is not eligible to play this Sunday against
the New Orleans Saints.
In order to make room on the 53-man roster, the Eagles waived WR Hank Baskett.
Even with Baskett gone, the team still has six receivers on their 53-man roster.
The move to let go Baskett and not veteran WR Reggie Brown may have come
to a surprise to some, but after examining the situation more closely, it does
make some sense.
Brown is signed through 2014 and a source said he would count $3.5 million more
against their salary cap if he's released. They're already responsible for his
$769,000 base salary which became guaranteed last Saturday because he was still
on their roster. Brown still has $2.7 million left in prorated signing bonus
that remains on his contract.
Baskett, since he's not a vested veteran, is subject to waivers. What might make
him less attractive to claim is his $1.545 million base salary for 2009. The
Detroit Lions still hold the first waiver claim spot until September 29, when
priority order becomes based on this year's standings.
Baskett, since Philadelphia acquired him after the 2006 draft from the Minnesota
Vikings for WR Billy McMullen, has been one of their better backup
receivers. He was also one of their best special teams players and also did a
solid job of blocking in the running game.
Teams that could have an interest in Baskett based on need or system fit are the
Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs,
New England Patriots, St. Louis Rams, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
